Well maybe not quite yet........
but we are travelling to this fair city (from Singapore) in a couple of days time and staying in a hotel on Union Square for five days.
So for those of you who either live in San Francisco, or know it well, what are the five things we MUST do while there?
Let me know your thoughts and ideas.
best wishes
Roger

My wife is originally from that area. She says the fire truck tour across the Golden Gate is awesome. Here's the link.

Thanks Michael,
An interesting concept - especially the overactive dalmation!
I found the direct link to the 'tap dancing' firemen at http://www.fireenginetours.com/

I know its cliched, but Alcatraz is fascinating - eerie, some interesting interpretation, yet also a sense of irony, almost vulgarity[?] with so many visitors wandering around freely - the parallel of it being a place we choose to go to now.
also, walking the GG bridge is just fantastic! The art deco detail is surprising!
Have fun!

I know you're probably back from San Francisco by now, and you must have ridden one of the streetcars - terrifying and thrilling all in one package. I was amazed at Chinatown - elegant, clean and serene - very much unlike NY's Chinatown.

I like just thinking about San Francisco just to pretend that there isn't 10 inches of snow outside the door!
Hi Lisa,

I recorded my impressions of San Francisco in my personal blog site.
See: http://singaporesojourn.blogspot.com/2008/02/san-francisco-chronicl... , for the direct link to the article.

Yes I enjoyed the cable cars, hanging on to the side as we rocketed down the hills - a lot of fun. Overall though I have to say that San Francisco was not what I expected it to be. The plight of the homeless on the streets was quite appalling

As to Chinatown - well it was not a Chinatown of the sort I am used to. But of course I am spoilt living in Asia and existing with real Chinatowns in this part of the world.

If you have a look in the Global Museum Shared documents section (http://www.4shared.com/dir/4421962/63a85a6/sharing.html) you will see a couple of images I have put there (Charlie & Guitarist) for free download.

Yes the homeless are a problem. I just got back from SF and the only way to avoid them is to stay out of the tourist areas I guess. As a local we just passed them by, didn't make eye contact and walked briskly. We had problems at our museums with them messing with tourists to the hoards that live in Golden Gate Park and would flash employees etc. Many of them are mentally ill and you never know when they might go off. So anyone going to SF it is a great city but be aware of this problem.
Having lived and worked in San Francisco here are a few: cable car ride, Alcatrez, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Golden Gate Park, Golden Gate Bridge / Presidio Walk. An additional one is Golden Gate Park and the museums, arboretum and other sights.
Don, as a former resident you are certainly in a better position than I am to offer Lisa advice. Thanks for contributing
best wishes
