I am an up-and-coming museum professional (so I tell myself!) and I'm looking for an entry-level position. In the past few months, I have applied for two promising jobs at local museums, one of which fit me perfectly and the other I was overqualified for. Neither have contacted me back.

I'm in a bad place where I have just enough experience to be dangerous, but not enough to apply for full curator positions. Oh, I have a BFA in Art History and an MA in Anthropology, focused on museum and cultural studies.

I write amazing cover letters, or so my editor friend tells me, and my resume is very polished. Is there something I'm not doing that would better attract the powers that be in the museum world?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Lee

Lee,
Where are you located? I happen to be hiring for my museum in Charleston, SC.
All the best,
Rikki

Oh, too bad I'm on the wrong coast. I'm in San Diego.Which actually makes things so frustrating, since we have so very many museums here, it seems like I should have better luck, right?! I wish I knew someone to refer to you, but all of my people are in the midwest (I went to school in Kansas).

Thanks anyway!

For the past 15 months I have been employed as the House Manager of a small Gilded Age museum in Lenox Ma.
Even though the place is not a full fledged museum, yet, and I only work 30 hours, if I'm lucky, it is an opportunity that I just stumbled over. Two summers ago I was working a summer gig at a local Performing Arts center, and I happened to pass this place, on a whim, I went in and filled out an application, and dropped off a resume. They had no position open, but when they say my previsious museum experience, they offered me a job immediately. If you live in an area that has so many Museums, just stop in at all of them, you never know what will happen. Good Luck in your search.Dan
